It is Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathi's poetic lines which made me to try this scene in warli....

In the words of a tamizh lyricist (Pulamaipithan?) from the Tamizh film "Barathi"....

எதிலும் இங்கு இருப்பான் அவன் யாரோ?
எனக்குள் அவன் இருப்பான் அறிவாரோ?

தவழும் நதியை தரித்த முடியான்

Krishna playing the flute, the mesmerised Cows & calf came and surrendered at his lotus feet.  Hearing the Venu Ganam, the Gopis and Gopas got lost into that divine melody...

Ardhanarishwarar - Kerala Mural Musings 2

Couple of days back, I have shared my first try on Kerala Mural painting using water color. Thrilled with the outcome, I decided I will make another one and this time something big and different from the first one.  Came across lot of pictures from internet and finally decided on Ardhanarishwarar.

Since I am doing this art by looking at a small picture from internet, I had little tough time in sketching it. After trial and error, finally drew a decent picture which definitely will not justify the beauty of the original but still I was happy as I felt the improvement from my first try.

This time, I tried to keep the color subtle as much as possible. Working with water color is always fun and this project, I enjoyed more.

Sharing with you my work step by step as it advanced...

Light pencil sketching and started darkening the outlines with outliner.

Started coloring.... 

The coloring stage normally starts with a similar color application and then getting into the details. However, I forgot that and it flowed naturally in my own way, which I will keep in mind in my next project.

Major coloring done. Now waiting for the details.

Major details added.... still some finishing minor ones to be done.

This painting was done as per God Shiva's wish and  I dedicate it at his lotus feet. Praying that all the  Kailash Manasaroar Yatris be blessed with a smooth journey to & fro and darshan.

Devi - a simple Kerala Mural work using water color

I always admired the Kerala Mural Paintings. They have their own charm. The vibrant colours, selected shades of natural colours, the curvy features and designs are unique to this art.

I wanted to try it, so chose a simple design from the internet, sketched it and then colored it using water colors.  I haven't learnt painting professionally. Just managed with the natural skills and tried this.

Embossed Warli Painting -1

Made an embossed warli painting recently and was waiting for it to get framed. So it finally reached my hands yesterday night and here it is for your eyes :-) Its my first attempt using embossing method. Idea borrowed from a craft programme telecasted on a TV show very long back. Remembered it one day so decided to try.

Embossed not in metal but in paper. Yes it is easy to make.

You will need :-

1. Catridge (paper to paint)
2. Fabric glue
3. Acrylic colours (Black, burnt sienna, brown)
4. Gold colour
5. Thin brush
6. Flat brush
7. Toothpick

Procedure :-

• On the catridge, draw any warli design of your choice. In this painting I drew a tree, birds, people watering the tree.

• Fill the figures with fabric glue. For the tree bark effect, once the glue is semi dry, using a toothpick scratch the tree to get the bark texture. Let it dry for a day.

First apply a coat of diluted burnt sienna all over using up & down strokes only. No horizontal or criss cross strokes. Use a flat brush for this purpose. Hope the picture below will give you an idea of how it is done.

• Over this using brown colour - dry brush stroke, apply on the edges downwards, this will give a dark edge and bright centre. Let it dry.

• Using black colour & thin brush, make edgings in the tree where you need highlight

• Using gold paint, paint the embossed figure leaving the black highlight. Let it dry and then get it framed.

Warli Painting - Village Carnival

I was doing some theme paintings in warli. First one was Village Feast. This is the second one.

This is given away as gift. I got the photo before framing only. So sharing it with you all.

I very much enjoyed doing this project as bringing out the carnival scene is very interesting as I love them very much.

After the rest I was all set to lay my hands on the colour pencils which was lying unattended. Here I am to share with you the first one.....

warli painting - The feast

Warli is an art originated in Thane district of Maharashtra. It uses geometrical figures to bring out the day to day activities of the people of olden days.  Through this painting we come to know how active people were and what sort of life they lived, their culture etc.

Welcome you all to a wonderful feast! Luckily this painting got saved as the borders got damaged at frame work place when the new trainee made a wrong cut near the border. Happy that my painting is safe.

Soorya Bhagwan

Lord Soorya in his Chariot with Aruna (The Charioteer) and the seven coloured horses to pull his one wheeled chariot. The names of the Seven Horses are Gayatri, Brhati, Usnik, Jagati, Tristup, Anustup and Pankti. I painted each horse with different colour. This is the painting that i keep in every soorya pooja on a 'Pongal Day' -The harvest festival of the state of Tamil Nadu, celebrated praying to the Sun God, the source of energy for all the living beings in the world.

Scratch Painting - I (Thirupathi Balaji)

Scratch painting is done using oil pastels. First the colour of pastel of your choice is applied in the appropriate part, then the entire base it coated with Black Pastel. Using a used empty ball pen point, compass needle have the scratch the coats of pastels and create design. It is has to be done carefully as re-working will spoil its beauty.
